Does Thumb Sucking Damage Children's Teeth?
A common question of parents is whether thumb sucking can damage a child's teeth. If the child has stopped sucking their thumb or using a pacifier by age 4 or 5, there is usually no permanent damage. If the child is a vigorous and constant thumb sucker, however, there can be moderate to severe movement of teeth and prevention of normal bone growth. This can result in the need for orthodontic treatments. Your Smile Brighton dentist or hygenist can discuss with you the treatment options for your child at his/her next appointment. Call us at (810) 227-6567 to learn more or to schedule your child's next dental appointment.
